Getting on track for a job at a magazine?

i want to know what you have to study in college, what degrees you need, and what are some good schools. after school, what will i need to do next? the two magazines i want to write articles for are cosmopolitan and national geographic. and do i have to move to the city where the main office is located? or do they have different branches in different areas?
