Help and advice on obtaining a British Cycling License?

I am a XC Mountain Biker and after years of freeriding and doing little events I thought I would join BC and get a race license so I can do some of the bigger events. What I would like to know is do BC automatically tell you what category license you will recieve (i.e. Sport, Elite, Expert) or can you choose what level you wish to purchase?
